1. 表示“在…中間”，通常用于三者或三者以上的人或事物，其賓語通常是一個表示籠統(tǒng)數(shù)量或具有復數(shù)(或集合)意義的名詞或代詞。如：

They hid themselves among the trees. 他們躲在樹林中。

I found it among a pile of old books. 我在一堆舊書中找到了它。

2. 有時可用來引出最高級的比較范圍。如：

The book is the best among the modern novels. 在現(xiàn)代小說 中這本是最好的。

3. 表示“是……當中的一個”，相當于 one of。如：

I was among the first to come. 我是來得最早的一個。

1. 用作名詞，意為“數(shù)量”、“金額”等，通常用于 a (great, large) amount of 這類結構，其后通常接不可數(shù)名詞； 這類結構用作主語，其謂語的數(shù)取決于 amount 的數(shù)。如：

在這座橋上花了大量資金。

正: A large amount of money was spent on the bridge.

正: Large amounts of money were spent on the bridge.

比較：在 a great number of 之后通常接可數(shù)名詞(用復數(shù))。

2. 用作動詞，意為“合計”、“等于”、“意味著”，通常是不及物動詞，其后常接介詞 to。如：

Building cost amounts to six million dollars. 建筑費用達600 萬元。

Her reply amounts to a refusal. 她的回答等于拒絕。

This amounts to doing the whole thing over again. 這等于要把整個事重做一遍。
