Children are natural scientists, very interested in the world around the. Helping the enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific ters(科學(xué)術(shù)語)or odern labs. You only have to share your children’s interests.
Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroo of seven-year-old children to talk about science as a job. The children asked e “textbook questions” about schooling, the oney I got and whether I liked y job. When I finished answering, we sat facing each other silently. Finally I said, “Now that we’ve finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long wait, a boy put up his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper(蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stoachache. Why?” This began a lot of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give the tie to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, any teachers usually wait only one second or less for an answer, no tie for a child to think. When teachers increase their “wait tie” to three seconds or ore, children give better answers.
But in talking about science, these words ake a child think that the discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’ve never thought of it that way before”, or coing up with ore questions or ideas.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with coputers. Brain¬coputer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send coands to achines.
Recently, two researchers, Jose illan and ichele Tavella fro the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, deonstrated (展示) a sall robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about oving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the uscles to give us the ability to ove. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals fro reaching the uscles.’ Tavella says. “Our syste allows disabled people to counicate with external world and also to control devices.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals fro the scalp (頭皮) and sends the to a coputer. The coputer interprets the signals and coands the otorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two caeras that identify objects in its path. They help the coputer react to coands fro the brain.
Prof. illan, the tea leader, says scientists keep iproving the coputer software that interprets brain signals and turns the into siple coands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: counication, and controlling devices. One exaple is this wheelchair.”
